A picosecond laser is a laser device that uses very short pulse durations to target endogenous pigmentation and exogenous ink particles (tattoos), blemishes, and wrinkles. Picosecond laser uses pulse duration of less that 1 nanosecond, which causes predominantly photoacoustic damage rather than photo thermal destruction of pigment or ink particles (measured by production of heat). This results in effective clearance of abnormal pigment, while minimizing photothermal damage to the surrounding tissue, because selectively destroys the target pigment without damaging healthy, normal tissues/With the innovation of the picosecond laser it can cause the color pigment to break down thoroughly and results in less treatment times that other laser treatments.
